ARTIST Rik Oostenbroek is a self-taught visual artist, designer, and art director from The Netherlands. With over 16 years of experience, Rik has made a significant impact in the design world, contributing his unique and dynamic style to some of the biggest brands worldwide.

The art of Dutch artist Handiedan involves a complex cut and paste mixture of digital and highly detailed sculptural hand cut collages, complimented with augmented reality and conscientiously collected antique ornamental frames.

WORK The inception of “Self” originated as a therapeutic self-portrait for Rik. Following the birth of his son in January 2021, numerous aspects of his life underwent a transformation, particularly his mindset and approach to his craft. “Self” was intended as a journey into his inner self. Through the repetitive process of creating it over 30 times, Rik came to the realization that perfection is unattainable. One can only strive to be the best version of thyself, recognizing that personality is an ever-changing entity that never reaches a final state as long as we are alive, despite our pursuit of perfection.

COLLECTION What began as the simple act of sharing a sketch of Riks work evolved into a collaborative effort involving over 400 artists worldwide. They used the core and message of the piece to create their own self-portraits. A beautiful version is this collected one of Miss Handiedan.  

This project, encompassing both digital and physical exhibitions, was recognized as one of the five most influential web3 projects of 2022. Self is a landmark project in the Web3 space since it eloquently plays with cooperation between people while staying close to ones one ‘Self’. In doing so it also experiments loosely with the changing ideas around copyright. When Open Source is the standaard, especially for creatives everything changes.
